Polly, this is such an interesting idea, about Julia's letters. Hmmm. And y es, I save those that I think are the best, which is many of them!! Thank you.
Yes moving away from an old house with many memories, and not all of them mine—There was the time before me ~200 years. We moved a year ago and are still facing some boxes of "treasures". Sounds like you in Louvier, which we visited alas without you Susan. However, we bought bouquets of lilies of the valley and peaked through the wattle fence. So glad we found you so long ago in your first book in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston bookstore and have been following you ever since. Thank you and YUM!
Margaret, thank you for this! Yes, so much history here and actually very little of it mine, but what I do own has an intensity all its own! Before I put out those bags I may have to go through a few of them to retrieve some treasures!
Once again, this reminds me so much of my own French experience. I wasn't writing, but teaching and everything was paper, of course. Not being able to make photocopies meant disaster. As for photos, they are the one thing I hauled back after my mom's death -- they're light to carry in a suitcase. Some go back to my great-great-grandmother. I started a sorting and labeling project, but lost steam. Who knows what will become of them...
I have the same issue with letters received -- and sent! My grandmother and mother also saved everything I wrote to them. Some social history somewhere in there. Also, the Julia Child Foundation might want her letters to you.

Someone will value them. I would think the very old ones could be donated somewhere...they must have historic value
